Academic Representation
As well as you representing your fellow class colleagues there is another side of academic representation which involves us representing you.
Academic Appeal
An academic appeal is defined as a request for a review of a decision of the board of examiners, which is the body charged with making decisions on student assessment, progression (progress from one year to the next) and awards.
A request for a review of a decision of the board of examiners may be made if a student has reason to believe:
has not taken into account.
- The board has failed to give proper consideration to extenuating circumstances or other information presented to it
Exceptionally a student may appeal on the grounds that there were extenuating circumstances which he or she did not disclose to the board. However in such cases the student will be required to demonstrate that there were good reason why the circumstances were not disclosed.
We are here to represent you or support you in any aspect of dealing with an academic appeal. Just ask!
Academic Misconduct
Academic misconduct is any intentional or reckless conduct by a student, or students with the aim of gaining an unfair advantage or benefit, or causing an unfair disadvantage or loss of another student, or students in pursuit of an academic qualification at BG. This includes conduct which is an ATTEMPT, whether successful or not.
Examples of academic misconduct:
- Plagiarism
-
Cheating
- Collusion (Working too closely with your peers)
-
Falsifying results
- Impersonation
-
Conspiring
For definitions and more check the academic policy documents under Academic Misconduct.
In an attempt to reduce Academic Misconduct cases we are greater publicising codes of conduct and academic misconduct documents. Click here to read them online or you can pick up paper copies of any of the documents at the Students' Union office.
If you are accused of an academic offence such as plagiarism or collusion you can come to your union to represent you and fight your side. All cases are strictly confidential and do not involve anyone that is not directly involved.
